11.15 Why War is Good for the Coming Science Civilization

15. Those Two Words Again
Noon. Rounds end. Kimi sits across a table from the Direktor eating Chinese noodles and listening.
“I have preached against war but this one was inevitable given the mentality of our leaders. And it is best for our nation.”
This is a new, surprising tack in Sanya's thought, Kimi guesses from raised eyebrows and sudden stop of eating around table.
“Had we not attacked America and now were we not getting so soundly defeated, our people would continue believing the samurai bushido way of the warrior class, with its vicious, violent idiocy. With defeat and occupation Science shall be the new model.
“And war produces techno wonders. Look at Penicillin! It took war to get it. I expect atomic energy to be liberated and also artificial intelligence and more of the like. The war is bringing the overpopulation contradiction to the fore. But, I fear, the outcome will not be good for Earth. At the war's start, 2-billions humans. If the world standard of living were averaged out and spread equally around the world - the resources are not enough to match the per capita consumption at a modern industrial nation's standard. And even if the technology improved to produce more from less, what the remarkable Mr. Richard B. Fuller calls “ephemeralization,” the pollution produced by the excess fossil fuel energy use from every new human's consuming—-as each one will in a post-war scenario —shall destroy the living environment in multiple ways, from overheating, to poisoning from the polluted air, to increased ultraviolet rays from the sun due to destruction of the ozone layer.
"This war is going to be won by America. And the result will be an outbreak of overpopulation and consumercraziness. Babies will fill nurseries, because that is what consumer capitalism thrives on. My guess is we shall see a doubling of World Population by 2000 and tripling by 2050!
“My idea for Science Civilization is that the present world of nations must first be wiped away. HG Wells's partly prophetic Things to Come should be the model.”
Kimi listens. Sanya's words, 'Science Civilization', bring memories of Tommy's words at Seminar and of Matsuoka's words. It gives her a happy thrill.
