2.62 The German Question of 1939

62. The German Pavilion

Kimura saves the German Pavilion at the World's Fair for lunch. With Ali toting cameras, he arrives a few minutes before noon and hands his card to a tall, slim, efficient blonde behind desk. Minutes later, Hollywood handsome Herr Kruger is introducing himself. He speaks perfect English and kisses Ali’s hand, murmuring “Let us forget formalities, Fraulein. Call me Kurt and may I say ‘Ali?’ What a marvelous name!”
Ali is totally taken by his Aryan Presence, perhaps an instinct from her blond, azure-eyed Germanic ancestors that mixed their DNA with and caught the culture of the Roman conquerors to form the French.

Kruger leads them inside and sends his secretary to round up German goodies from the kitchen. Kimura has a purpose and it requires privacy. He knows Kruger but neither one shows it. During the 1936 Berlin Olympics, Kruger dealt with the press and he & Kimura became friendly to the extent Kruger is one of a few persons who may call Kimura “Ken.” Both are intellectuals, writers, believers in H.G. Wells's idea of a cabal of scientists who after getting into control in governments will rid the World of political leaders and unite to move Earth toward a destiny in the stars, which means Science Civilization, a democracy of the science-educated. Such were the discussions at night in beer halls but the reality remains that each man has his own destiny to work out before Utopia becomes unbound.
Kimura orders Ali to take pictures and the secretary is detailed to assist. Then Kruger noticeably relaxes and reaches across table with right hand to grasp Kimura’s left shoulder while Kimura does likewise in a symbolic gesture of conspiratorial friendship – the twentieth century version of Jacques-Louis David’s Oath of the Horatii.
Gesture of Conspiratorial Friendship - Oath of the Horatii

The two are too intelligent to waste time on cliché.
   “Kurt, I have a question.”
   Kruger awaits it.
"Everyone knows Germany’s anti-Jewish policies, starting with the Fuhrer’s words in Mein Kampf. Now my sources tell of a plan of liquidation, a Final Solution. How can you a cultured European, agree to that?”

Kruger is silent. It is the kind of question one only frankly answers to a friend.
