28. The Future in Her Arms
First night of Festival and the village kids gather on beach for fireworks. Jun is delegated to shoot off rockets and Kimi is one of 3 young single women supervising the young kids. Jun starts by lighting flashers that shoot colorful sparks. The kids run about excitedly trailing brightly sputtering flashers on string. Then Jun sets off shooting rockets streaming fire and exploding in brilliant bang of multicolor sparks that slowly drift down. Each has a parachute and as the rockets go off, screamy meemy kids rush to where the parachute is landing in order to retrieve it and win the game.
Kimi keeps her eye on a 4-year-old who appears fascinated by a rocket still sputtering at a landing site. Having ignored repeated warnings the small pigtail girl creeps so close to the sputtering rocket that her face will possibly get burned.
But Kimi swoops and grabs her. Standing, holding the warm little body she thinks, I am ready to have my own now.
