27.Stanislavski Method

I sit across from Stalin, interpreters, on each side. Just before we start, a tousle-haired, pudgy girl about age 10 runs in, jumps up on his lap and starts talking in wheedling voice. It is daughter Svetlana. He chuckles then hugs her and pulls coin from pocket. She takes it gravely and at his order gets down and bows to us and after hug and kiss she runs from room. Stalin comments he has spoiled his Lana impossibly.

   Hitler plays to the crowd but Stalin plays directly to each person in audience. He follows the Stanislavski method, living his role and uses real props. Hitler fools you by pyrotechnic but when it is over you realize it is performance but with Stalin you do not know until the rug is pulled and you land on your head with crash.

   He starts by saying he is Asian and I am Asian and the Future belongs to Asia so shouldn't it be fitting for the 2 great Asian powers to sign mutual friendship. He observes that Japan is communist in everything but word. “Communism is when people and leaders are one and that is certainly so in Japan.” He watches my reaction to see if he has gone too far. When I continue to smile he goes further.

   “I know the Emperor is Darwinist; and Darwin, to use phrase from my seminary schooldays, is patron saint of communism whose idea of biologic evolution parallels Marx's of historical evolution. Both ideas are part of the Hegel Absolute Idea. Were the Emperor to speak his inner mind, I think, he would agree with Marx.” He watches the effect of his words closely and seeing none continues circling in.

   “Hitler is lunatic put in power by capitalist money to turn Germany into National Socialist bomb against Soviet Union but the capitalists do not realize they are arming a man whose unique power has united the talented scientific Germans not only to destroy Russia but the West too. Hitler like Sorcerer’s apprentice once set about his job will do it with maniacal diligence that – if not stopped quickly and completely – can only end with Earth a smoking ruin over which his Thousand-Year Reich presides.”

   Stalin knows of Germany's progress in developing the Bomb and Rocket. He smiles enigmatically after springing it on me.

   “Japan will be best served as ally of Russia since Hitler's racial theories admit no place for yellow skin brothers.”
   And so it goes. The hard sell bell has rung. The pressure is on. He wants the pact in order to free up 1 million Red Army troops along the Border but I want it to disarm Soviet suspicion before we stab them in back. I recall Adolf's plan: Yes, a concerted German front attack and Japan rear attack on Russia would win the 5 years he needs to get the Bomb on his rocket launching pad for New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, the not so obscure object of Adolf's desire. And the 5 years would benefit Japan by getting us needed natural resources.
    After victory will come the Science Civilization future never before achieved dream of Earth – a controlled population guaranteeing survival of many species and space exploration program that will have us on Moon and Mars in the lifetime of our children, all of which contrasts to the selfish over-consumption of food and drink and technological toys by super selfish generations if America wins. On the other hand, if Adolf does not succeed, the Pact will still benefit future Japan.  So, in my idea it is Win-Win.
   My sense of importance and my knowing something that none of Stalin's spies had told him make this negotiation ‘easy as pie’, as Americans like to say, so when he pulls complete text of Russo-Japanese Neutrality Pact out of folder and puts it on table I spend the requisite hours reading it and next day propose minor changes I know he will accept. And that is that and I leave Moscow feeling I shall go down in history as key player in Fabulous Future, one way or another.

28.America’s Triumph, Gaea's Tragedy

Returning to Tokyo I am shut out by the Emperor. Swayed by his racial inferiority complex and influenced by Admiral Yamamoto's orchestration of how he, Yamamoto, would force white America to its knees by doing Pearl Harbor, the Emperor decided to strike the Anglo Saxon Powers counting on the gamble that they will be pre-occupied with Hitler and overawed by our initial success and accept a peace-in-our-time compromise.
   Even after Hitler struck Russia in June 1941 and while still time for us to join it, the Emperor did not budge. What he and his militarist Marching Morons did not know was that Roosevelt fathered the Pearl Harbor idiocy (The U.S. broke our code and Roosevelt did everything to goad us on to the attack) 

   In Privy Council I raged against Pearl Harbor using my moniker ‘the man of 50,000 words’. An attack on Pearl Harbor would actualize at one swoop the fondest desires of Roosevelt & Stalin – stir up the American public till then tending toward isolationism and turn them in favor of war to defeat Germany and Japan and in so doing dash the hope of saving Earth from Americrazy consumerism and also make certain Japan would become a U.S. puppet with future hot dog and hamburger stands on every block.

   As for Pearl Harbor's vaunted military impact; the U.S, having broken our code, Roosevelt knew the exact date and logistics of the attack and made sure the harbor housed only obsolete battle wagons whose destruction would ensure within 1 year the launching of a brand new fleet with latest radar and radio-control rockets our navy lacked.

   When I refused to cease opposition and it was July and months before the planned December day, I was ordered to retire for my health.

   So I did and here I am and there we are – America’s triumph, Earth's tragedy.

29. End Matsuoka

Matsuoka sips cold cup of tea while Tojo sits grim-faced. Kimi, right hand aching from writing, cannot forget Science Civilization – the Earth one great green environment with a small talented active and effective human population leaving lebensraum for animal and plant and even caring about rock and other inanimates, and progressing space exploration to Moon and Mars.
   After, she thinks maybe her baby's baby would grow up under the moons of Mars. She recalls Kimura on flight of imagination saying Mars had 2 moons, an inner Phobos (Fear) and outer Deimos (Terror) and that a writer Borros (sic) did a story that takes place on one.

   Kimi is not yet a save-the-Earth person. All she wants is peace so Baby can be born and grow up without bombs falling on her head. “Her!” She stops. If it be a girl! Well, whatever! Matsuoka had failed in his world-changing mission and Kimi, practical, as women with a baby on the way are, is already thinking how she will live after America takes over. Whatever else Americans are; to Kimi they represent part of the culture of Kimura, of Olga, of Harumi – multiracial, multinational new world culture in which one can speak mind with no fear of thought police, in which women will have equal rights and can divorce and control baby making. On a propaganda pamphlet dropped from American plane she read President Roosevelt's 4 Freedoms – of thought, from want, from fear and to pursue one's happiness. How good it had read! If losing war gives change from old system it will be good. She has never heard “bird in hand is worth 2 in bush” but that is what her practical mind follows: Deal with America now, Utopia later.

   Kimi has given up patriotism. She nurtures future.
