6. Lesbian Rape in a Bronx Flat
Ali is staying at Apartment 1A. It is in a building on north side of Mosholu Parkway – the building, a 5-story-high, red-brown brick, already faded and looking older than the 15 years since its being built in the booming late 1920's when the children of Jewish immigrants were deserting the lower east side Manhattan for the Bronx.
A brief walk up from the Alfonze's street corner, Ali turns in, to her right, and goes under a fancy entry arch into a wide court with a fenced-in central area of bushes and one big maple tree and. to her right, goes up a 6-step side entrance and through a glass-panel door that leads into the lobby of the building's east wing. Inside is the superintendent (“Super”) “A” apartment and his Black Joe helper Sam across hall in the “B” apartment.
Ali's 1A is up 1 flight of 2 oppositely directed stairways of 10 steps. Coming off the steps, looking to her right, she sees the door with shiny, silvery 1A at eye level, at end of hall. At the metal door, she notes it a fading green. The door's knob is at her waist level and she inserts the key in slot just above doorknob, turning clockwise and being rewarded with easy movement and a click. Grasping the doorknob she turns it clockwise and again is rewarded with the door swinging open inward and to her right. She enters into the apartment's dingy hall and reaches overhead for a hanging-down string of beads, pulls it, and a 40-watt overhead bulb lights dimly. She walks forward passing on her right the entrance to a kitchen and on her left a dumbwaiter door. At hall's end is a glass-panel French door and off toward the right, another short hall leading to a bathroom. She pushes the partly open French door, whose knob is on her left, it swings inward to her right and she enters a living room about 18 feet (c.6 meters) long in direction of entry, with 2 windows at far end overlooking the Parkway, and 15 feet (c.5 m) wide, and a 9-foot (c.2.7 m) high ceiling. Like all the "A" flats it is described as living room/kitchen/bath and is the smaller of the two basic apartment sizes.
Ali is just taking off her coat when a hurried "knock-knock-knock" sounds down the hall and a voice. “Bren' here, Ali!”
“Door's not locked," Ali shouts as she hurries back from the living room. Brenda enters quickly, shuts the door, flips the lock and before Ali can ask “Wha?” hugs her hard, through both their clothing, breast to breast, belly to belly in the lesbian way.
“Ali, I'm burnin’for yuh! I got it bad. I need to get it off on yuh.” Brenda lifts Ali’s skirt. Then, pushing Ali against the hall wall, and with her own dress up and bare skin to skin she presses against Ali and after a minute she has rubbed herself into an orgasm meanwhile filling Ali's mouth with tongue-to-tongue kisses. Ali realizes she has a young girl in heat and out of control and offers no assistance or resistance.

When Brenda has got her breath Ali says, “Baby, you don't want to become a complete lez." What about your nice Jewish boy?”
“T’hell wit' dat Yid! He's just good for money, like all dem hooknoses. I love yuh, Ali. You changed somepin' in me. I don' need guys anymore. I never felt anythin' like this wit' a guy. Am I crazy, Ali? Whut can I do? I love yuh!”
“OK, Bren'! Take it easy. I’m not going away. But you are not gonna become lez,' if I can help it. Now get yourself together and go back down and tell Moyshe we had our little discussion and make him happy however you can.”

7. Describing Ali's Apartment 1A

Ali now takes a look at her flat. First, the living room: At center of the 9-foot (2.74m.) high room's ceiling is a triangle lighting fixture with 3 screw-in, 60-watt light-bulbs. The room walls are painted white, and are faded & peeling. A molding runs the length of each wall 1 foot (c.0.3m.) below the ceiling. The flat's room floors are shiny brown-shellacked, 2-inch (5cm) wide smooth planks that run lengthwise (from entrance to window wall) and are not covered by a rug. Next week, Ali plans to install Japanese tatami rectangles, 5 x 7 foot (1.5 x 2.1 m.) for a complete tatami floor. Her idea, from Tokyo living, is that the softer, more resilient tatami will prevent body injury or breakage from falls. And the tatami is pleasing to walk on, easy to clean and does not get cold in winter And oh that natural fresh fragrance!
Ali is rearranging Alfonze's old living room. She already got rid of his double-bed for space. When Alfonze asked “Where ya gonna sleep, baby?” Ali pointed at the floor, explaining that once the tatami is in place its rush mat grass fiber will be perfect for sleeping on.
In the near corner to her left as she enters the living room is a dark mahogany chest of 4 drawers, atop which is a shelf cabinet with books. The far wall, facing her as she opens the glass-panel room-entrance door, has 2 sash windows giving a south view overlooking the Parkway. The window by the far corner to left has an outside red metal grill fire escape that connects all the A & B flats as an escape route down the south side of the building. In the same far corner, is a silver-paint, steam-heat radiator and floor-pipe presently emitting moist heat that Ali prefers to the charcoal or benzene heating in Tokyo.
She plans as little sleep as possible - sleep only when sleepy or very bored is her attitude. Her awake schedule she makes into 2-hour sessions, then repose for 30 minutes. “Repose” means to lie quietly after injecting 2 milligrams (mg) of morphine into her front thigh. She will use the old sofa along the wall on her right for repose with her head facing the windows.
The room is now cleaned spic & span since Ali spent Sunday sweeping, wiping and scrubbing after taking every movable thing outside into the hall. Then she put back everything neatly according to her Bronx logic.
She walks back to the kitchen. It has a white 1938 Frigidaire in right corner as she peeks in from the entrance hall, and across from it is a kitchen sink, counter and a dish-washing under-space, and cupboards high on the wall. There is a small window that looks out, onto the courtyard but now has old yellowed curtains blocking. And a small table for 2 is at center of the kitchen.
Going back down the hall and to her right to the bathroom, she guesses its length 8 feet (c.2.4 m), from door to clouded window, overlooking the Parkway. It has a small water-tap sink on her left as she enters and white ivory-looking, 3-foot (c.1m.) deep bathtub 5 1/2 feet (c.2m.) long and 2 1/2 (c 0.75m.) feet wide with overhead shower head. The floor is white tiles, small hexagons stained by 15 years of dirty feet but Ali means to change that by strong cleansers. A hanger for towels is to her right on the wall now covered by a blue, fading, peeling paint continuing onto the ceiling a little higher than an adult can reach with tip of finger.
Ali is still in process of planning but already the flat gives her a comfortable feeling.
