37. No Failure to Communicate
Another thing Eddie learns from his experience in Occupied Japan: there is no failure to communicate when 2 persons share the same interest but not the same language. At the start, at Camp Zama, Eddie was zero in Japanese and Ryo slightly better in English.
By Ryo's arrival in Chitose, Eddie has progressed to a basic understanding of Japanese but with very poor vocabulary. So they do GI pidgin, a combination language between soldier and non English speaking girl. It has no articles - a or the - and uses few verbs to express much meaning. For example, "catch" is an all purpose verb from to catch marry (get married) to to catch mad (to be angry). A lot of sex slang is quickly appropriated while hubba-hubba is used for sexual relations. And it is learned by body language. As a soldier's Only learns English words, her vocabulary grows quickly.
