21.  Touch Down at Haneda

Inside the Northwest-Orient Airline jet, the announcement "Prepare for landing at Haneda International Airport, Tokyo. Be sure your seat belt is fastened," interrupts Eddie's meditation: Wow! It's been 20 years since last I touched this shore! What will Ryo be like? She is 65 years old. Will she still fuck like before?
Eddie is not completely in the dark. When he left Japan, he set her up with money and in a seamstress business she operated out of her home in Shinagawa, a busy commercial/residential section of Tokyo. He sent her money by check; enough to assure she would not want. He had not been in touch but he knew she was alive from the cashed checks in his monthly bank statement.

The first difference from Occupied Japan, he notes in airport passport & customs area. Everybody is well dressed and no soldiers. He gets a taxi and hands the driver Ryo's address on a small paper from years ago. In fifteen minutes the taxi stops on a side street. The driver hands Eddie back the paper and points to an alley near which they are parked.

22. Across the Alley --
thinks Eddie as he passes through the alley and comes to the old, peeling, horizontal wood-slat house he recalls. Standing facing the side-sliding door he says loudly "Moshi-moshi!" the equivalent of Hey there! Anybody t'home!
After less than a minute the door slides aside and an attractive young woman, with well kept black hair curled on her shoulders by beauty parlor and in brown skirt & jacket as if just returned from her office job (It is about 5:30 PM) looks at him in surprise.
Eddie asks "Does Mrs Ryo live here?" using the Mrs as a token of respect for Ryo's longtime widow status.
The young woman nods her head Yes and gestures for Eddie to enter.
He leaves his shoes in vestibule and stepping up and through a bauble, bangle & beads curtain enters a combination kitchenette-living room and, there, sitting by a hibachi is Ryo. Eddie notes with some relief She hasn't aged as much as the actual years passing. Her hair has gone gray but she has kept her slimness and not added many lines to the creases of her face. She is in a simple calico house dress.
  "Ara!  Eri-san!" Ryo exclaims.
Eddie had not written or called ahead so this is a complete surprise.

23. Ryo's life in the Interim
Sitting across from Ryo, Eddie learns her years without him were tranquil and worry-less thanks to his money. Her mother is dead, her son grown up and married, and the young woman who slid aside the door for Eddie is 23-year-old daughter Yuko, who has a 6-day-a-week office job in central Tokyo.
Eddie notes Ryo's English is still heavily accented but not hard to understand and Yuko speaks passable English.
Ryo, after listening to his quick, brief recounting of his life, says "You catch me again, deshyo? Come live here, my shack!"

He travels with only the clothes on him and with books and a few personal things plus tens of thousands of US dollars in cash.
He muses New life, old wife and asks, "I lie on futon? Tired from the trip."
Ryo speaks to Yuko who slides aside a door to the inner room, and goes and lays the bedding.
"You catch bath before futon," Ryo orders and goes to prepare a hot bath.
   Eddie has come home

24. First Night
After having Ryo clean him in the bath room and then sitting in hot water in the small home pool, Eddie notes the very pleasant natural smell of the tatami flooring and the fresh futon bedding and in a minute he is sleeping.

Several hours later his consciousness returns; he is lying on his back, head on the firm Japanese pillow arranged by Ryo and, he notes happily, Ryo is sleeping beside him on his right, on her back. He  has an erect penis, almost violently pulsing upwards. He has not had sex for months because of Nina's final illness. He nudges Ryo who instantly comes awake and murmurs, "You wanna catch hubba-hubba. C'monna me now!"
He can feel she is in a yukata, a simple wrap-around cotton gown. And its front is open. He rolls over on top of her without further words and she opens her thighs and he slices in. "Hubba-hubba!" she exclaims in the GI girl way of goading him on to strong sex. He reaches his arms about her butts and forcibly lifts them to coincide with his lunges. She lies passive under his action and as his semen starts pumping into her, he feels her spasms that he now recalls always signal what seems to be her almost automatic orgasm in response to his coming.
What a woman! he thinks. A perfect fucking machine that serves up her own orgasm signal.  "I love you, Ryo," he cries and she says "Dameh!  Wake Yuko in next room; too loud!"
"Oh, sorry!" he says, recalling her Dameh! means Bad! Naughty!

Ten minutes later his erection returns stronger than ever. This time he wants to take her from back and indicates it by shoving her around. She arches her buttocks to assist his rear access. He likes to do the anal opening both ways - front or rear - depending on what has gone before, and, since tonight he has done her sexual opening from her front, he wants her now from her rear. This takes a bit of careful insertion and she helps by reaching back and grasping his shaft and easing it into her anal opening. "You catch strong do-be! she whispers, using her secret word for back-hole sex. "But no hurt me, Danna!" He thrills to her use of Danna, or in English, Master, the traditional Japanese woman's word for My husband.
Now he has gotten completely deep into her and feels the paradise pleasure of the soft furry insides. "Oh Ryo! Oh Ryo! Oh Ryo!" he exclaims keeping to a whisper and has an electrically ecstatic ejaculation such as he never experienced with Nina. Then he sleeps contentedly till morning.

25. The Shack
In morning after breakfast Eddie re-views Ryo's floor space, estimating the total to be  5.5 meters by 5.5 meters (18 by 18 ft). The front, which he had entered from the alley, in floor space is a little more than than 3 meters (10 feet) from his left to right as he enters from vestibule and 3 meters in depth, with charcoal cooking at center. Along the walls - to his left as he enters from outside - is Ryo's sewing machine, and chest of drawers; on his right, a sliding door closet for storage. Deeper into the house, separated by sliding door panels, are 2 inner rooms, the larger on the left where he and Ryo sleep at night, and during day he uses it as a study, and the smaller on right, used by Yuko. The floors are all tatami, it is the rush mat flooring that has a nice fragrance and also is protective against things falling down on it. The futon bedding - mats and comforters that one rolls up during day and stores in side closet - allows more use of floor space than one has in a western bedroom. A bath room is in near right corner of the main room; it is a Japanese tile floor inlaid bath, with two wall faucets for filling wood buckets of water that you pour on your head as you sit low on your bare buttocks on a several-inch-high wood seat. The toilet is in the far right corner of the main room, easy of access for Yuko from her room and Eddie & Ryo from their sleeping mat; it is an enclosed hole in a wood floor one squats over. Several times a year the honey bucket man comes to empty it and a strongly fragrant bar of soap serves to neutralize odors.

Over the next weeks, Eddie gets used to new living. He relearns how to sit on the floor. He buys materials for his comfort. He settles in for a long term. And he is thinking what its direction shall be. First, I want enjoy doing nothing but fucking Ryo night and day, he thinks. As Yuko is away at work during the day, and he sleeps in separate room on futon with Ryo, privacy is no problem.

He explores Tokyo, using his Japan on Five Dollars a Day book as locator. Quickly he discovers a not far away medical school with full English library and after introducing himself to chief librarian he has privileges to take out and copy books or journals. He uses the International House in Roppongi for popular library. He studies spoken Japanese at Berlitz  and takes lessons in the written language, soon buying a Nelson's Japanese Character Dictionary to study on his own at home.

26. What Shall I Do, The Rest of My Life?
Is a thought Eddie mulls over, lying on futon, tasting a bitter morphine ball dissolving under tongue to sharpen his intellectual process. One thought is: Ryo's home shall be my Mountain Mama,"Haven," I'll call it; the place I come home to. I want to become - what is the word? - a Polymath - master of knowledge.
Thinking that, he takes out his copy of Physician's Notebooks - got from Professor Edwardes, it has an educated person's knowledge of a lifetime. In the preface, Eddie had read that a goal of each educated life ought to be the amassing of knowledge based on the experience of that life. And that knowledge should be passed on and enlarged in each new generation. Thus he - Eddie - would dedicate the rest of his life to increasing the knowledge and writing it down, adding to Physician's Notebooks, for the next generation.
It was, to para a phrase, a significant obsession. Having reached that threshold of thought, Eddie drops off to sleep.
