*5. The Library Extraordinaire

Since getting back from the Army and now completing first year medical school at Albert Einstein in the north Bronx, Eddie lives at home with parents. He commutes to school by 30-minute bus trip with walking from mornings 8 AM till whenever he heads homeward. Sometimes he sleeps over near the school with Danny.
Since Eddie met Nina, a new world opens for him - a discovery of opportunities based on the chance encountering. Nina presents the sexual attraction that lubricates the encountering but, surprisingly, Eddie does not go for the sex. His experiences with Miss Ali, with the homosexual man in the car, with Miss Prissy, and the living with Ryo in Occupied Japan has made him knowledgeable about sexual relations and removed the itching curiosity that bothers young men to always try it out on first encountering.
Nina has an aura of other-worldliness about her.
The library policy of 24-hour, everyday access was highly unusual and even controversial because it allowed students to break the Sabbath rule. After hours, a student may use the library any time for study. A librarian is always on duty, sometimes Nina.
Even for a medical school library the AECOM library is massively stacked: first, the journals; it has everything back to the mid 19th century; then, old books collected from donors, and even non medical works like Encyclopedia Britannica editions back to 1850.
The library is well furnished: sofas and armrest couches and tables and chairs and electronic typewriters and copy machines.
Eddie's eyes quickly discern that one can live at library.

2 AM, Saturday and Nina is doing an overnight. Eddie has shown his ID at building entrance and enters the empty library. Nina looks up and a minute later they are sitting talking on the white sofa that centers the library lobby.
"Danny talks much about you. May I say Ed?
   "OK ...... Nina."
"I feel extraordinarily comfortable with you. Are you a Capricorn?"
"I don't believe in that. My birthday is January tenth."
"Ah, a Capricorn! That's why you are not getting fresh with me as all the others do. Did Danny talk me over?"

Danny said Nina is nymphomanic, and he explained his change of the word by "But she ain't a maniac. She the most brilliant person, I never met, but the girl just can't help it."
Eddie knew about nymphomanic from Miss Ali's telling him about her friend Virginia Van. From that telling, he got afraid to mix it up with one..

"Boy, Nina, your grammar's great. Most would say 'like all the others do' and be wrong. But not you. You're not like all the others."
   "Thank you, Ed."
"Nina, to change subject. You know what is computer?"
"Of course. A person who figures out odds and ends."
"Well yes. And, Boy! Are you acute! And I don't mean your looks though they are too. About computer, I'm talking of a machine that figures not only odds and ends but more than that."
"Say on. You fascinate me so."

So Eddie tells Nina about his Army computer experience and the programming he'd done. And from this a plan evolves to set up a computer that he and she can use.
