37. Broken Field Run Behavior, or Be Like Flitcraft
The most important precept is Broken Field Run. Its forerunner may be found in Dashiell Hammett's The Maltese Falcon, in a digression of Detective Sam Spade; I call it the Flitcraft Principle. Its point is to prevent getting locked into bad routine behavior like overeating unhealthy things. By getting into a lockstep with a killing behavior being on a schedule with sudden death. By breaking routine, a person may avoid a fearful fate. For example, Eddie had got into the habit of going to the supermarket at 8 PM to buy discount bargains but in doing so he was tending toward unhealthy eating. So whenever Ryo cooks an interesting supper or Yuko brings food home, Eddie thinks,Free food!! And he adds to the thought, What a good excuse not to go for discount eats, tonight! On another occasion, Eddie reads of a 10-year-old child's life getting suddenly ended because his parents decided to take him along with them to greet someone at the airport and the timing was such that the child was right in the way of a 200 kg (c.440 avoirdupois pounds) overhead sign that suddenly came down on the child's head. And Eddie thinks, Had the parents cultivated Broken Field Run and, that day, decided not to do what they planned, the child would not have lost 80 to 90 years of good life.
38. Another Pentagin Repose Thought - Don't Follow the Crowd. Avoid Trendiness
In his pentagin repose, Eddie realizes the importance of a stable, well thought-out worldview. He sees clearly the mistake of trendiness - following the majority opinion as it undergoes waves of change. An example is the now developing favorable view of the American homosexual lifestyle - especially male gay lifestyle. While not being prejudiced against it, Eddie, after considering the health risks, the societal dislocations, and the destructive family and social implications of the gay lifestyle, keeps his opinion of it as an unhealthy sexuality that circumstances may force some individuals to adopt but that should not be normalized by societal approval although all criminal laws and prejudices against it should be removed. It is one of many examples of basing a worldview on facts and using logic to decide for one's self what is best for one's own long healthy life in a happy society rather than just following popularly received opinion.
